Meeting of November 14, 2001

In attendance Lisa, Roger, Norm, Neil, Bob, Keith and Dave.

Roger received letters from Scott Weyda and Holy Apostles regarding Katie Potts matter.  The matter was discussed at a previous directors’ meeting, and she was granted a waiver to play under the transfer rule, provided the proper documentation was received. The documentation being proper, therefore, the waiver is approved.  The letters will be kept with the official minutes.

Division of talent rule.  There are no rules governing the division of talent for the 7th and 8th grade teams.  There was discussion of implementing it for B teams for 7th and 8th, but currently, that is not covered by the rules. No action was taken

Sanctions.  Bylaws authorize the board to review division of talent problems only for teams that are receiving trophies. Therefore, only St. Romans 5th grade and Holy Apostles 5th grade were discussed. Norm had responses from both schools.

St. Roman’s 5th grade, Division 1 fielded two teams, the red and the white.  At the end of the season, the records were 13-23 for the white, versus 30-6 for the red.

St. Roman’s advised that they had a new volleyball coordinator who was not familiar with the rules governing splits or changes, nor were the coaches familiar.  That was the essence of their response.

Holy Apostles fielded three teams, and two were very close at the top of the standings, and the third near the bottom.

The response raised the following issues.  They had one extremely strong coach that personally played volleyball, and they recognized that at the beginning of the season.  They assigned him the appropriate players, in light of his background.  He was one of the three coaches that pushed his players to follow the three hit rule, which is difficult in the earlier years.  He had a practice of starting different servers every game, as opposed to starting the strongest server, who could perhaps score a string of points based on serves.  The head to head competitions were fairly close games.  The 5th grade had two sets of twins and one set of triplets, which in addition to “locks” for coaches’ and assistant coaches’ children, limited the ability to move players around.  The original standings were not correct for the early part of the season.  Scores were reported from a gym in the exact opposite of what had occurred, so while it appeared to the coordinators that there was a five game split at week three, there was really a seven game split.

After discussion, it was unanimously resolved that St. Roman’s 6th grade teams would lose their home games for the 2002 season.  In addition, they will be scheduled to play 2 head to head games, instead of one.  Finally, they will be requested to conduct two sessions in order to evaluate the talent for their 5th grade team next year, and keep records on how the divisions are made.  It is suggested that they rate each player as average, above average or below average, that they document this, split the teams appropriately, and then send the results to Parkview at the beginning of the season.

Concerning Holy Apostles, in light of the fact that they were dealing with 3 teams, that the results were initially inaccurate, and the problems with moving twins and triplets, it was decided that they would be required to play 2 head to head games against each other next year, and further that they conduct the team divisions as set forth above, and report the scores to Parkview.

On each of these matters Lisa Ryan is to write to the athletic directors and the sport coordinators.

Concerning forfeit fees, three schools are involved; Holy Apostles has submitted a check for $25.00, St. Joe’s Big Bend forfeited a league game, due to participation in a tournament, and has forwarded their fee.  WCSS would not work around their league games.

St. Roman’s 7th grade teams collectively forfeited 9 games on the final week of the season.  They have forfeit fees of $75.00.  Norm has apparently notified them of this.

For the three hit award, reporting has improved somewhat, but Norm still needed to call quite a few coaches.  It was decided to keep the three hit rule for one more year.

There was discussion of the St. Roman’s matter of involving the Nesleit’s.  Parkview received a request to reconsider its decision of mid July.  There was a telephone discussion between Lisa Ryan and the directors from St. Romans.  It was decided to affirm the penalties previously imposed.  There was discussion with the archdiocese concerning this violation and the penalty.  Playing in scrimmages or practices with another league is prohibited by Archdiocese rules, and St. Romans’ acknowledged that this did occur.

Concerning suspensions from last year, of Mr. Pavelco is suspended for the first game.  Brian Misko is suspended as well for the first game.

Bob suggesting a rule change for coaches on technical fouls.  If a coach draws two technical fouls, there is an automatic two game suspension for that coach.  Everyone concurred with Bob’s recommendation in that regard.

Ref’s are currently being paid at the rate of $19.00 per game.

Concerning snow days, each school has provided a cell phone number from one member who agreed to serve as a contact.  That way, Bob should be able to reach them at any time during the weekend, and then they can notify their appropriate coaches.

Meeting adjourned 9:30
