Volleyball and General Membership meeting of June 4, 2002

Director meeting took place 30 minutes before start of membership meeting.  Discussion of agenda, and who was covering various topics.  Present: Lisa, Norm, Roger, Neil, Keith.  Bob came shortly after general meeting started.  Dave was out of town.

Discussion of application for volleyball of MPS language school.  800 student school located at 84th and Burleigh was looking for a league to play in.  They were unable to find a fall volleyball league for their two teams.  After some discussion, voted unanimously to reject application.  We are currently near capacity.  Other Catholic Schools will or have applied.  Too many problems on large school size.

General meeting called to order by Lisa, who started with a prayer.

Treasurers report.  Dave out of town.  Report will be posted on web.  Lisa gave status report.  Financially doing well.  17K in funds, 14K in reserve MM acct.

Election of Board.  Discussion of individuals wanting place on board.  Unanimous vote by members to maintain current board of seven.

Attendance and roster of VB Coord taken.  Roster will be posted on Web.

Important dates discussed.  Memo summarizing them will be posted on web.

Email Scores discussed.  Keith will email excel spreadsheet to each VB Coord.  Please use the spreadsheet mailed, rather than creating your own.  Prevents transposition errors.

Norm emphasized need to check the score sheets prepared at game.  Check for team colors from schedule.  Check for grade.  And make sure they are correctly reporting scores as teams change sides.

Any conflicts for teams – CCD or Religious ed, or Scouts  or Field trips, must be put in writing when team commitments and checks are sent in.  There are no bye weeks.

Coaches clinic.  Saturday August 17th.  St. Joseph in Waukesha. Check web for details.  Brochure will be posted.

Discussion of Certification.  Consult archdiocesan rules.  Core certification – video tapes obtainable from school principal-  must be completed before a coach starts.  Good for five years.  Second certification requirement, is sport certification.  Three hours. Must be obtained within two years.  This is the clinic that is  being held at St. Joes.  Make sure it meets archdiocese approval (this one does).

(KRS-Keep a record of compliance in school office.  This also is something that the new policy manual requires.  Documentation is now a part of the periodic audit the archdiocese conducts on every school.  They will be checking for documentation in this regard.)

Norm discussed scheduling of volleyball games.  Due to many back to back games that are required to fit the games into an 8 week schedule, he needs 5 hour blocks of time, especially on Sundays.

5th and 6th grade teams, if there are more than one, must be evenly divided.

            Tryouts mandated

Norm suggests 1 week practice before making splits

Ask a club team player or players to rate the players.

Split soccer players.  They tend to be more aggressive.

Ask about a coaches experience as a player or coach and take that into consideration in making split.

Can adjust teams in first three weeks.

Comments from Roger

Make sure ball is NFHA logo ball

Try to get all white balls.  Not red-white-blue

24 ft serving line, should be 10 feet wide line.  Not just a short piece of tape

Taped earrings not allowed. No hair beads, bobby pins, no ankle bracelets, necklaces.

If no ref shows for 5th or 6th grade game, call Norm first, then Roger, and if not successful in reaching them, try to find a volunteer ref from the stands that the coaches will agree to.  They will be compensated at $13 for the three games. For 7th and 8th, you may need to go with one ref.  Two are assigned to those games.

Cheering.  Need to adjust to what ref will allow.  Roger said that stomping and clapping should be allowed, so long as it wasn’t taunting or in the face of opponent.  Keith will post former rule from WIAA.

Discussion of religious ed.  Need to get conflicts reported to Norm and Roger when team commitments are made.  If a player on a team is attending religious ed during a time that games are played, we need to know to avoid scheduling that team.  That team cannot be scheduled to practice during that time.  Probably a bigger problem for tournaments.  The rule requires compliance by the league and tournaments.

Discussion of rosters.  Primarily for tournaments.  Tournaments need to make sure that the teams are the same teams that are playing in a league.  It’s a new rule that will require the exercise of some discretion by tournament operators.  It requires a roster, certified by a principal or pastor,  that this is a team that existed during the season.  The rule is designed to prevent swapping players, or moving players up, or getting new players, for tournament purposes.  The bottom line is this: Insist that the team playing in the tournament is the same as the team that was together for the regular season. No more, and no less.  And insist on a principal or pastor’s signature that this is the case.  A regular season roster should suffice.

(P.S. Based on discussion between several directors after the meeting, allowing a public school or a rec team into a tournament is a bad idea.  First, archdiocesan rules prohibit AAU or select or All star teams.  The Public school teams sometimes require tryouts and make cuts or specifically invite players.  And, if other Catholic schools know that your tournament allows these teams, they probably will not enter your tournament The bottom line is you should probably stick with Catholic Schools only. KRS)

Discussion of trophies. Please pick them up promptly. If your school has won a first place award, they will get a plaque, which has plates on them.  Take an empty plate to Alberti’s Trophy’s and awards and they will have your first place award plate ready for exchange.
